“What we need is journalism”

I don’t usually simply link out to other blog posts, but in this case I feel compelled to link to Clay Shirky‘s extremely perceptive post entitled Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable.

He manages to post very well thought out explorations of unresolved questions and issues presented by the impact of the internet on old industries and models. If you haven’t seen his writing on micro-payments, it’s worth Googling.

One of the really great things about working at 24.com (there are lots of them) is that we are one of a number of internet and media companies around the world in which MIH and Naspers have a stake. Some our the companies we’re associated with include MXIT, Blueworld, Nimbuzz, Gadu-Gadu, iBibo, Abril, Compera nTime, Mail.ru, Allegro, Ricardo, Sanook, Buzzcity and more that I haven’t mentioned here.

It means we have a tremendous amount of talent in the group, and we get to compare notes and share experiences from time to time.

One of those times is now – I’m flying to Prague this evening to join an MIH technical conference. The focus this year is on mobile technology, but I think there is going to be a lot more to it than that. And we have some great guest speakers lined up. I’ve also been asked to present, and I’m hoping I can pull my weight in this sort of company!
